Warming up the soil with a cloche

At the beginning of the year you will no doubt be excited to get the new year started on your allotment of Vegetable garden, but in truth there is little you can do in terms of planting for the first couple of months of the year until the spring is upon us, however, you can start to make some preparations.

Getting the cloche out of the shed, making sure it is clean and free from damage and then putting it out on the ground where you want it for the up coming season. This will have the effect of warming up that patch of ground. It will not bring the temperature of the ground up to summer levels, but it will raise it just a little by one or two degrees, which will in turn mean that you can plant your seeds earlier and germination of those seeds and the later growth of the seedlings will happen quicker and stronger than if you planted them in cold soil.
